Class of 2004 QBs setting standard
INDIANAPOLIS — With Eli Mannings fourth-quarter rally in the Giants 21-17 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday, the quarterback class of 2004 now has four rings. Manning has two and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who went to Miami University, has the other two. Overall, the quarterbacks have made five Super Bowl trips, and are 4-1. When you compare that to the first eight seasons of the class of 1983, that is impressive. That group, which is the most ballyhooed in...

Eastwood's Super Bowl ad sparks the discord it decries
WASHINGTON — Perhaps the most attention-getting Super Bowl ad - other than that dog blackmailing his owner with tortilla chips to keep quiet over a felinicide, of course - was Clint Eastwood's paean to a resurgent auto industry in Detroit. The ad featured Eastwood leveraging his cinematic persona to the hilt, emerging from the shadows while praising and challenging America at the same time. "It's halftime in America too," Eastwood rasped during halftime at the Super Bowl in a manner reminiscent of the Detroiter he played in "Gran Torino." "Seems that we've lost our heart at times. The fog, the division, the discord and blame made it hard to see what lies ahead. But after those trials,...

Alighiero Boetti: An early Damien Hirst who had it all mapped out
Born in 1940 in Turin, he thought like a conceptual artist far beyond his time. As his career progressed, he challenged the notion that an artwork was only an artwork if it had been created by the artist's own hand. He had the idea, and he sent it out to be made by others, a concept that contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst and Takashi Murakami have since adopted. The method was contentious then as now: David Hockney is the last in a long line to criticise the artist that conceives his work, but does not engage in its production....

Zach Braff: Medicine man has the last laugh
Cut to 2012 and it's quite a different scene. Eight and half years on Scrubs has made Braff one of the most recognisable, and bankable, faces on American television. (From 2007 until the show ended in 2010, he was rumoured to be earning at least $350,000 per episode). Today, he splashes out on sparkling water, spaghetti bolognese and a cappuccino for lunch. A trickle of fans hover awkwardly by our table and the waitress asks for a picture when she brings the bill. Dressed in expensive layers of grey wool, he's older and less comical-looking than the rubber-faced J.D., almost a little Eeyorish. I'd been expecting a fast-talking, Noo-Joisey wisecracker but he's more a slow-burn, wry anecdote...
